Objective — The capture of moods and attitudes using sentiment analysis is increasingly facilitated by a rising number of freely available analysis tools. The following article provides an overview of these tools and their respective performances.
Methods — 20 product reviews published on the website of the online retailer amazon.com were analyzed, compared and based on these results a usage recommendation is given. Eight different sentiment analysis tools were used.
Results — The results of sentiment analysis depend on the tool used. The differences in the analysis results are in most cases blatant and the use of three of the eight examined tools can be discouraged due to the lack of performance.
Conclusions — When using one of the free-to-use sentiment analysis tools, care should be taken to ensure that the user does not rely solely on this tool. The perfect tool that completely replaces the human mind does not yet exist and this circumstance will probably not change in the near future.
